What Are the 12 Female Archetypes?
An archetype, in Carl Jung's psychology, is a universal pattern of the human psyche — a recurring image or role that appears across cultures and eras without anyone teaching it (Jung, 1959). The Great Mother, the Wise Old Man, the Hero, the Trickster: Jung saw these figures surface in dreams, myths, and religions separated by oceans and millennia.
The twelve female archetypes are feminine expressions of that tradition:

One important note before we go deeper: these archetypes describe energies, not categories of people. Nobody is only a Queen or only a Mystic. In Jungian thinking, all of these patterns live in everyone — regardless of gender — and different seasons of life call different ones forward.
Where the 12 Archetypes Come From
The twelve female archetypes don't come from a single study or a single author. They're a blend of three traditions, which is exactly why no two websites agree on the list.
Jung's original archetypes (1930s–1950s). Jung proposed that the collective unconscious contains universal figures — he wrote at length about the Great Mother, the maiden (Kore), the wise elder, the hero, and the trickster (Jung, 1959). He never published a tidy list of twelve.
Bolen's goddess psychology (1984). Psychiatrist Jean Shinoda Bolen mapped Jungian patterns onto seven Greek goddesses in Goddesses in Everywoman: Artemis the independent huntress, Demeter the mother, Hera the committed queen, Aphrodite the lover, Persephone the maiden, Hestia the inward hearth-keeper, and Athena the strategist (Bolen, 1984). Much of today's "feminine archetype" language — Huntress, Mother, Queen, Lover, Maiden, Mystic — traces straight back to Bolen's goddesses.
Pearson's twelve-archetype systems (1991–2001). Carol Pearson spent the 1990s organizing Jungian archetypes into twelve-type systems; the best-known version — Innocent, Explorer, Sage, Hero, Outlaw, Magician, Everyperson, Lover, Jester, Caregiver, Creator, and Ruler — appears in The Hero and the Outlaw, her brand-strategy collaboration with Margaret Mark (Mark & Pearson, 2001). The feminine twelve is essentially Pearson's wheel in feminine dress: the Innocent becomes the Maiden, the Ruler becomes the Queen, the Outlaw becomes the Rebel, the Explorer becomes the Huntress.
So when one site lists an Enchantress and another a Wild Woman, neither is wrong — there is no canonical twelve. These are interpretive symbols that writers keep remixing, the same way MBTI types get remapped onto other systems. That flexibility is part of their charm, and — as we'll see — their central limitation.
The 12 Female Archetypes, One by One

1. The Maiden
The Maiden is the energy of beginnings — curiosity, openness, and trust that the world still has good things in store. She's the part of you that falls in love with a new city, a new project, or a new version of yourself. In Greek myth she's Persephone before the underworld; in Jung's writing, the Kore (Jung, 1959).
Her gifts: optimism, wonder, adaptability, the courage to start over.
Her shadow: naivety, avoiding responsibility, waiting to be rescued instead of acting.

2. The Mother
The Mother is nurture and devotion — the instinct to protect, feed, and steady the people around her. Modeled on Demeter, she creates the safety other people build their lives on. Mothering here has nothing to do with having children; it's a way of caring.
Her gifts: warmth, loyalty, attunement to what others need before they ask.
Her shadow: self-abandonment, smothering, and the quiet resentment that grows when care only flows one way.

3. The Queen
The Queen is sovereignty — the natural authority to set standards, hold territory, and lead without apology. Her mythic root is Hera, goddess of commitment and rulership. She doesn't grasp for power; she assumes it.
Her gifts: command, high standards, fierce loyalty to her people, dignity under fire.
Her shadow: control, rigidity, and guarding status so tightly that warmth gets locked out.

4. The Wise Woman
The Wise Woman is insight earned over time — the elder, the counselor, the one who has seen enough cycles to stop panicking about any single one. She's the crone of the classic maiden–mother–crone triad, and Pearson's Sage in feminine form.
Her gifts: perspective, discernment, calm truth-telling, advice without judgment.
Her shadow: detachment, cynicism, and using understanding as a way to stay above life rather than in it.
You might recognize her if friends bring you their hardest decisions, and you'd rather understand a conflict than win it.
5. The Mystic
The Mystic lives close to intuition and inner life. Modeled on Hestia, keeper of the hearth flame, she's oriented inward — toward meaning, stillness, and the currents that run beneath what people say. She often knows things before she can explain how.
Her gifts: depth, presence, spiritual attunement, reading between every line.
Her shadow: isolation, escapism, and drifting so far inward that practical life falls apart.

6. The Lover
The Lover is passion and connection — Aphrodite's energy of full-volume feeling, beauty, and devotion. She experiences life through relationships and senses, and she makes other people feel intensely alive.

Her shadow: losing herself in relationships, needing to be desired to feel real, mistaking intensity for intimacy.

7. The Huntress
The Huntress is independence and focus — Artemis moving through the wilderness on her own terms. She's self-contained, goal-locked, and genuinely at peace in her own company, not as a defense but as a preference.

Her shadow: emotional distance, refusing help on principle, and lone-wolfing through pain that wants company.

8. The Heroine
The Heroine is courage under pressure — the one who steps up when things fall apart. Where the classic Hero slays external dragons, the Heroine's battles are often invisible: illness, loss, impossible workloads, other people's storms.
Her gifts: bravery, resilience, protectiveness, grace in a crisis.
Her shadow: burnout, turning every situation into a battle, and building an identity out of endurance.

9. The Rebel
The Rebel is defiance of convention — Pearson's Outlaw in feminine form. She exists to question the rules everyone else forgot were optional, and her presence alone makes stale systems nervous.
Her gifts: radical honesty, courage to catalyze change, allergy to injustice.
Her shadow: rebellion as reflex, burning bridges for sport, and opposition with no destination.

10. The Creator
The Creator is imagination made real. She sees things that don't exist yet — rooms, businesses, paintings, lives — and feels compelled to build them. Creation is how she metabolizes experience.

The Everywoman is belonging and groundedness — Pearson's Everyperson. She's real, unpretentious, and the connective tissue of every community she joins. She doesn't need a pedestal; she distrusts them.

Her shadow: self-effacement, fear of standing out, and blending in so well she becomes invisible to herself.

The Problem With Picking Your Archetype From a List
Read those twelve descriptions again and be honest: how many sounded like you? For most people it's three to six. That's not a personal failing — it's a structural one.
Symbolic archetypes are written to resonate. Like a well-crafted horoscope, each description is broad enough that nearly anyone can find themselves in it — a phenomenon psychologists have documented since Bertram Forer's classic 1949 demonstration, where students rated a single generic personality sketch as highly accurate for them personally (Forer, 1949). Academic critics have raised the same concern about Jung's archetypes themselves: they're evocative, but they aren't defined tightly enough to test or falsify (Neher, 1996).
There's a second problem: when you self-select an archetype, you tend to pick the one you admire, not the one you inhabit. The exhausted people-pleaser chooses the Huntress she wishes she were. The Queen-in-denial picks the Everywoman because it feels humbler.
And a third: symbols can't tell you how much. Real personality differences are dimensional — you're not simply "a Huntress or not"; you sit somewhere specific on measurable continua of independence, warmth, drive, and emotional reactivity. The same is true in relationships: how you love is captured far better by two measurable dimensions — attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance — than by whether you resonate more with the Lover or the Huntress. (And unlike a fixed symbol, attachment patterns can change with awareness and effort.)
None of this makes the twelve useless. They're a rich vocabulary for self-reflection — genuinely one of the best. But a vocabulary is not a measurement.
