The Best Personality Tests of 2026, Honestly Compared
If you want the most scientifically supported picture of your personality, take a Big Five-based test; the strongest free option is bigfive-test.com, the strongest budget paid option is Understand Myself, and — full disclosure, we make it — the most personalized option is Plexality: a profile written for your specific results, with a coach you can ask anything.
One honest sentence before the table: we build one of these products, so we have a horse in this race. That is exactly why we bought every paid report on this page, completed all twelve assessments, and recorded every price with the date we verified it — so you can check our work.
Every cell below comes from primary sources: the platform’s own site, or the product itself where we bought it. The relationships column is one no other comparison publishes — and, as you’ll see, it is mostly empty for a reason. Sort by any column; click a row for our full notes on that platform.

NERIS — Big Five-derived scores presented as MBTI-style letter types
Mixed / in-house evidence
Free type result with full slider scores and ~48 written insight sections — the most generous no-signup free tier we tested.
$9 Full Report · $29 Career Suiteobserved 2026-07-27
We bought both tiers: the real $9 value is web-only (extra tests, tools, relationship analysis). Both paid PDFs are static type e-books — zero personalization, verified page by page.
Partner comparison requires inviting your partner or manually entering / guessing their type; premium relationship guides are static content.
A popular, polished starting point
Official MBTI (mbtionline)
Jungian dichotomies — the original 4-letter instrument (Global Step II, 143 items)
Actively disputed
None — nothing is shown before the $59.95 purchase.
$59.95 (Careers version $79.95)observed 2026-07-27
We bought it and completed all 143 items: your type is revealed only after a mandatory ~30-minute learning course, and the only download is a 3-page type description — no scores, no facet results.
A "Compare" tab with static type-vs-type bullet lists you select manually — no partner linking, no data.

Truity TypeFinder
MBTI-style 4-letter typing with 23 measured facets
Actively disputed
Free basic type result; full report is paid.
from $19 (reports $19–29)observed 2026-07-27
We bought the 23-page report: all 23 facet scores, a 16-type match matrix (best-fit percentages for every type), and career content.
Type-compatibility articles only; the paid report has zero relationship pages.
An MBTI-style type with real numbers behind it
Truity Big Five
Big Five (OCEAN)
Strong evidence
Free trait scores.
$29observed 2026-07-27
We bought the 17-page report: five trait percentiles (the entire quantitative payload), nine two-trait pattern graphs, and band-templated life advice. No facet scores.
None — the "Social Life" section covers friendship only.
A tidy Big Five summary in PDF form
Truity Enneagram
Enneagram (9 types)
Weak evidence
Free basic type.
$19 ($29 with a $10 coupon auto-applied at checkout)observed 2026-07-27
We bought it: all nine type scores, ~10 pages of type-template content, and a genuinely good scored "superpowers and blind spots" section.
One type-generic relationships page — more than Truity’s other reports offer.
Enneagram fans who want scores
CliftonStrengths (Gallup)
34 talent themes in 4 domains (Gallup, formerly StrengthsFinder)

None — account and payment required before a single question.
$24.99 Top 5 · $59.99 all 34observed 2026-07-27
We bought Top 5 and took all ~200 timed items: an 18-page report with response-keyed "Why your X is unique" prose — real personalization, but zero numeric data, and themes 6–34 stay hidden behind the $59.99 upsell.
None anywhere in the product.
Work, teams, and manager conversations
Enneagram Institute RHETI
Enneagram — the official 144-item Riso-Hudson instrument
Weak evidence
None for the RHETI itself (separate free mini-tests exist on the site).

We bought it and answered all 144 items: every one of your nine type scores appears instantly at submit, plus a 20-page PDF with deep profiles of your top three types.
Per-type "relationship issues" sections plus editorial type-combination content — no two-person data.

How we evaluated these tests
Most “best personality test” lists are written from screenshots and press pages. We took a different approach: in July 2026 we created accounts and completed every assessment on this page — all 144 RHETI items, all 143 questions of the official MBTI Step II, roughly 200 timed CliftonStrengths pairs — and purchased every paid report, from the $9 tier to the $59.95 one. Prices in the table carry the date we verified them, at checkout level wherever we bought the product. Where a claim rests on published research, we cite the researchers by name below.

Free-tier honesty
does the free tier inform, or just tease the paywall
Two findings from actually buying everything, instead of quoting sales pages: price is inversely related to numeric depth in this market — the $59.95 report we bought contains zero scores while a free academic test provides thirty — and several paid PDFs are identical for every buyer of the same type, which no product page will tell you.
The 12 platforms, reviewed
Short, honest reviews — what each platform genuinely does well, what to watch out for, and who should pick it. Our own product is reviewed under the same headings, cons included.
Our platform — so read this row with that in mind. Plexality measures the Big Five at the aspect level along with attachment style and emotional intelligence, maps you to one of 33 archetypes — and then keeps going where other tests stop: your profile is written for your specific results, and PLEXAR, the coach chat that knows your profile, is there to ask anything.
Genuinely good
Your profile is crafted for your results. Having bought every competitor report on this page, we can say plainly: most are templates, identical for every person who shares your type.
Results aren’t the end of the product. Every other test here hands you a report and goes silent; PLEXAR knows your profile and answers your questions about it.
The free tier is genuinely complete: full assessment, full profile, real scores — not a teaser.
When you want the two-person view, pair compatibility reports show exactly how you and another person fit together.
Watch out for
Newer platform: our norm base is smaller than Gallup’s or 16Personalities’ multi-decade datasets.
Seeing your results requires creating an account — 16Personalities shows its free results with no signup at all.
No team or workplace tooling — if you need facilitation kits, CliftonStrengths or DiSC serve that better.
Archetype names are ours; they won’t match the MBTI letter codes your friends may already use.
Pick us if you want a profile written for you and a way to keep asking questions of it — with the two-person view there when you want it. Skip us if you need workplace team tools or an MBTI letter code for a bio.
16Personalities
$9 Full Report · $29 Career Suite · observed 2026-07-27
The most popular personality test on the internet — an MBTI-style letter type built on Big Five-ish sliders, with an enormous content library and a famously generous free tier.
Genuinely good
The most generous no-signup free tier of any commercial platform we tested: full slider scores and dozens of written insight sections, instantly, no email required.
The $9 tier’s web tools (supplementary tests, trait mini-tests, relationship analysis) are real interactive value.
Polished, likeable writing that makes results easy to share.
Watch out for
We bought both paid tiers and checked the PDFs programmatically: neither contains a single personalized number — every INTJ buyer gets the same e-book.
No published independent psychometrics for the NERIS model.
Letter-type framing inherits the boundary problem: score near a midpoint and your four-letter identity can flip.
Start here for fun and a shared vocabulary — just know the paid PDFs are type e-books, and the free tier is most of the actual value.
Official MBTI (mbtionline)
$59.95 (Careers version $79.95) · observed 2026-07-27
The official Myers-Briggs instrument from The Myers-Briggs Company — the real 143-item Step II assessment, not a free clone.
Genuinely good
The type-verification flow is honest best-fit psychometrics: per-dichotomy clarity bands and an "estimated vs. reported type" comparison no imitator reproduces.
True save-and-resume mid-assessment — rare in this list.
Watch out for
The most expensive product here ships the thinnest deliverable we bought: a 3-page, copyright-2007 type description personalized only by your name.
You cannot see your own result until you click through a ~30-minute mandatory tutorial.
Four different domains and two logins stood between paying and finishing when we ran it.
Buy only if you specifically need the official instrument. If you want data for your money, RHETI gives nine scores instantly for a third of the price.
Truity TypeFinder
from $19 (reports $19–29) · observed 2026-07-27
Truity’s flagship — an MBTI-style test that actually shows its work, with facet-level scores underneath the four letters.
Genuinely good
The 16-type match matrix reframes type as best-fit percentages — genuinely better epistemics than "you are an INTJ, full stop."
Hedges honestly when you sit near a facet midpoint ("you likely use both styles").
Best of the three Truity reports we bought: 23 pages, most of them earning their place.
Watch out for
Zero relationship content in 23 pages.
Template-assembly seams show: sentence fragments truncated at page boundaries in every Truity PDF we bought.
Results are deleted after 14 days unless you register — pressure mechanics.
The best cheap MBTI-style report. Just don’t expect anything about your relationships.
Truity Big Five
$29 · observed 2026-07-27
A paid narrative wrapper around a standard Big Five assessment.
Genuinely good
The nine trait-pair "circumplex" graphs are a genuinely interesting lens most free tests don’t offer.
The underlying model is the right one.
Watch out for
Five numbers for $29: free academic tests (below) give 30+ scored scales for $0.
No facets, no relationship content at all.
Same template seams as the other Truity PDFs.
Fine if you want a polished PDF. If you want Big Five data, the free options below are quantitatively richer.
Truity Enneagram
$19 ($29 with a $10 coupon auto-applied at checkout) · observed 2026-07-27
Truity’s Enneagram test with a paid narrative report.
Genuinely good
Shows all nine type scores, not just your winner.
The numeric superpowers/blind-spots section is the most personal page in any Truity report we bought.
Watch out for
Called our test profile a Six on a 4-point margin over Five with zero hedging — and when we ran the official 144-item RHETI on identical answers, it scored Five 28 to 14. Confident and wrong is the worst combination.
Most of the report is type-template prose any same-type buyer receives.
Decent value at the couponed $19 — but treat close type calls as a coin flip it won’t admit to.
CliftonStrengths (Gallup)
$24.99 Top 5 · $59.99 all 34 · observed 2026-07-27
Gallup’s workplace strengths assessment — ~200 forced-choice pairs on a hard ~40-second-per-item timer, feeding a Top 5 themes report and a large coaching ecosystem.
Genuinely good
The timed pairing format is the most game-resistant instrument we tested.
The "Why your X is unique" paragraphs are keyed to your actual response pattern — real personalization, unlike static type e-books.
Workplace action items are concrete, and the surrounding coaching ecosystem is unmatched.
Watch out for
Zero numbers anywhere: no scores, no percentiles, and 29 of your 34 themes are hidden unless you pay $59.99.
The most hostile purchase flow we encountered: account before payment, checkout across three subdomains, results behind another login.
The report’s closing pages are an upsell brochure.
The right tool for work and teams. For self-understanding per dollar, weak.
Enneagram Institute RHETI
$20 · observed 2026-07-28
The Enneagram Institute’s official 144-item instrument — pay $20, take the test, see everything.
Genuinely good
All nine numeric type scores shown the instant you submit — the most transparent deliverable of any paid Enneagram product we tested.
Honest best-fit framing: "your type is almost certainly among your highest two or three," with a misidentifications guide.
No account needed — the test code is the login. One soft upsell, no tier ladder.
Watch out for
The 20-page report is verbatim book content — rich, but identical for every person who shares your top types.
The Enneagram’s evidence base is the weakest of the frameworks on this page.
If you want an Enneagram result, this is the one to pay for.
Everything DiSC (Wiley)
~$90–100/profile via partner resellers (no direct consumer price) · observed 2026-07-21
The dominant commercial DISC brand — a workplace communication-styles tool sold through a partner and certification ecosystem, not to consumers.
Genuinely good
Simple shared vocabulary that works in a workshop room.
Mature facilitation ecosystem if you are running team sessions.
Watch out for
No direct consumer purchase and no public price — figures above come from partner listings.
Four boxes where trait science finds continuous spectrums; little independent validation.
For facilitated team workshops only. Individuals should look elsewhere.
Crystal
from $49/mo · observed 2026-07-21
A sales-enablement tool wearing a personality-test hat: DISC profiles for you, and estimated profiles for the people you’re about to email.
Genuinely good
The free personal profile is decent, and the archetype labels are friendly.
If you want communication-style guesses about prospects, nothing else here does that.
Watch out for
Profiling people who never consented to a test is an accuracy and ethics minefield — treat estimated profiles as guesses.
Subscription pricing makes it the most expensive option on this page within months.
Jordan Peterson’s productization of the academic Big Five Aspects Scale: one $9.95 test, one dense percentile report.
Genuinely good
Fifteen percentile-scored scales for under ten dollars — nothing else on this page comes close on data per dollar.
The couples report is the only competitor product here with real two-person data: both partners’ numbers, side by side, across every scale.
Blunt, specific writing that commits to what your scores mean.
Watch out for
The couples report requires both partners to buy and complete the assessment — there is no single-player mode.
No synthesis across traits: 15 separate scales, no overall summary, dashboard, or action layer.
The report is a print-formatted web page, not a designed document.
The best budget scientific pick, and the only competitor with real two-person data. Its gaps — synthesis and single-player compatibility — are exactly what we built Plexality to cover.
Free IPIP tests (bigfive-test.com and peers)
$0 · observed 2026-07-27
Academic Big Five item pools wrapped in free websites — bigfive-test.com is the best of them.
Genuinely good
Thirty facet scores and six exportable charts for free — quantitatively richer than several $29 reports on this page.
No email gate, no upsell.
Watch out for
Numbers without narrative: you get scores, not interpretation or synthesis.
Results live in your browser — close the tab on some of these sites and they’re gone.
The best free data on this page. Pair it with something that explains what the numbers mean.
Not sure where to start? Our full assessment is free — complete profile, real trait spectrums, no teaser tiers.
“Scientific” gets stamped on every test’s marketing page, so here is the evidence spectrum with the research named. The pattern to notice: the further a framework moves from continuous trait scores toward fixed types and boxes, the weaker its evidence gets.
Strong, replicated evidence
Big Five · Big Five Aspects Scale · HEXACO
The consensus model of personality science. Aspect-level refinements (DeYoung, Quilty & Peterson, 2007) split each of the five traits into two research-backed aspects. Free academic instruments (IPIP item pools, hexaco.org) use the same foundations. This is the family Plexality, Understand Myself, and Truity’s Big Five test build on.
In-house research, thinner independent review
CliftonStrengths
Gallup publishes extensive validity research on its 34-theme model — including construct-validity work against the Five-Factor Model — but most of it is Gallup-authored or commissioned. It positions the tool for workplace development, not as a scientific personality model, and that honest positioning matters.
Actively disputed
MBTI and MBTI-style typing (16Personalities, TypeFinder)
The publisher’s research reports reliability of 0.81–0.86, while independent studies reviewed by Pittenger (2005) found 39–76% of people receive a different type on retest within weeks. The structural problem is the either/or cutoff: score near a midpoint and a tiny shift flips your entire four-letter identity. Trait versions of the same measurements (which is what 16Personalities’ sliders actually are) rest on much firmer ground than the letter codes printed on top of them.
Weak evidence
DISC · Enneagram
A 2020 meta-analysis (Lyons & Reid) found DISC’s construct validity weaker than the Big Five’s, with most supporting research vendor-commissioned. For the Enneagram, a peer-reviewed systematic review (Hook et al., 2021; PubMed 33332604) found mixed reliability and validity across 104 samples — and factor analyses recover fewer than nine empirical types. Both can be useful reflection vocabularies; neither is a measurement instrument in the Big Five’s class.
Here is the strangest thing we found buying every report in this industry: people overwhelmingly take personality tests to understand their relationships — and almost no platform offers anything for two people. This is what each product actually provides a couple, observed first-hand:
Truity (all three paid reports)
0–1 pages of relationship content across 58 purchased pages; TypeFinder has zero in 23.
CliftonStrengths
No relationship layer exists anywhere in the product.
Official MBTI
A "Compare" tab of static type-vs-type bullets you select by hand — no partner data.
16Personalities
Partner tools require inviting your partner or guessing their type; premium guides are static.
Understand Myself
The exception: a real couples report with both partners’ percentiles on all 15 scales — if both buy the $9.95 test.
Plexality
Pair compatibility reports plus a coach chat that knows your profile — built as the product’s core, not an add-on.
Two products take couples seriously. Understand Myself gives a real two-person report — both partners’ percentiles, side by side — and deserves genuine credit for it; its constraint is that both people must buy and complete the test, and the report stops at presenting numbers. Plexality builds the two-person view in as a capability rather than an add-on: you can explore compatibility before the other person ever signs up, and PLEXAR — the coach chat that knows your profile — can discuss what your results mean for a specific relationship. If relationships are why you’re here, that is the honest comparison that matters.
It depends entirely on the framework. Big Five-based tests are backed by decades of replicated research and predict real-life outcomes better than any alternative. MBTI-style typing is actively disputed: publisher-funded studies report high reliability while independent studies find 39–76% of people get a different type on retest. DISC and Enneagram tests have weaker evidence still. The test format matters less than the science underneath it.
Which personality test is the most scientific?
Tests built on the Big Five model — including aspect-level versions like the Big Five Aspects Scale — have the strongest scientific support. That covers free academic tests like bigfive-test.com, Understand Myself, Truity’s Big Five test, and Plexality. If a test sorts you into a fixed type or box rather than scoring you on continuous traits, its scientific standing is weaker.
Is paying for a personality test ever worth it?
Sometimes — but not for the reason people expect. Across the twelve platforms we tested, paying more did not buy more data: several $25–60 reports contain fewer numbers than the best free tests. What paid products can add is interpretation, synthesis, and application — a narrative that connects your scores, compatibility analysis, or coaching. Judge a paid report by what it does with your results, not by page count.
What is the difference between MBTI and the Big Five?
MBTI sorts you into one of 16 fixed types using either/or dichotomies; the Big Five scores you on five continuous trait spectrums. The Big Five has far stronger research support, and most of what MBTI measures maps onto it — the letter types are essentially simplified slices of trait spectrums. Our full comparison of the two frameworks covers this in depth.
What personality test should couples take?
Only two platforms in our comparison offer real two-person analysis: Understand Myself has a couples report with both partners’ percentile scores (both partners must buy the $9.95 assessment), and Plexality offers compatibility reports plus a coach chat that knows both profiles. Everything else offers either type-generic pairing articles or nothing at all — relationships are the biggest blind spot in this industry.
Can your personality type change over time?
Traits are stable but not frozen — research shows gradual, meaningful change across years and life stages, and measurable change from deliberate effort. This is one more reason continuous trait scores beat fixed type labels: a spectrum can show you moved; a box just tells you that you switched boxes.
The fastest way to compare? See your own results. The Plexality assessment is free, and the full report is $19 — less than half of what the thinnest report on this page charges.
