Take the Big Five the way researchers actually measure it: five trait spectrums, ten underlying aspects, and your complete scores shown free — no teaser tiers, no letter-type boxes.
We compared twelve personality platforms and bought every paid report on the market — the Big Five came out as the framework with the strongest evidence, and honest free scoring as the rarest feature. This test is our answer to both.
Five continuous spectrums — remembered by the acronym OCEAN — each splitting into two research-backed aspects. You land somewhere on every one of them; the combination is what makes you recognizably you. For the deep dive on each trait, see our Big Five traits guide.
Openness
Intellect · Aesthetics
Curiosity about ideas, art, and new experience — from pragmatic and grounded to exploratory and abstract.
Conscientiousness
Industriousness · Orderliness
Drive and structure — how you organize work, follow through, and hold standards.
Extraversion
Enthusiasm · Assertiveness
Where your energy comes from and how you engage — sociability, positive emotion, and drive to lead.
Agreeableness
Compassion · Politeness
How you weigh others’ needs against your own — warmth, cooperation, and directness in conflict.
Neuroticism
Withdrawal · Volatility
Sensitivity to stress and negative emotion — from unflappable to finely tuned to threat.
In 2007, researchers DeYoung, Quilty and Peterson demonstrated that each Big Five trait contains two distinct aspects with different genetic and neurological signatures. Two people with the same Extraversion score can be opposites in real life — one high in Enthusiasm (warm, sociable), the other high in Assertiveness (driven, take-charge).
Most free Big Five tests stop at the five trait scores. Plexality measures all ten aspects — the same resolution used by the strongest paid instruments — and then goes a step further, mapping your aspect combination to one of 33 archetypes so the numbers come with a narrative you can actually use.

We put twelve personality platforms through their paces — completing every assessment and buying every paid report — for our honest platform comparison. Four criteria separated the tests worth your time from the rest:
Continuous scores, not boxes
Personality varies on spectrums. Any test that ends in a fixed type label is throwing away most of what it measured.
Aspect-level measurement
The 10 aspects (two per trait) are where precision lives — trait-only tests blur meaningfully different people together.
A validated item pool
Items derived from the peer-reviewed Big Five research tradition, not marketing-driven questions.
Honest free results
You should see your actual scores for free. A test that hides your results behind a paywall is a sales funnel, not an assessment.
Honest note: if all you want is raw numbers, free academic IPIP tests like bigfive-test.com are genuinely good — 30 facet scores, no email required — and we say so in the comparison. Where they stop is interpretation. That’s the part we built Plexality for.
Free: your complete results
Full trait spectrums at the aspect level, your archetype among the 33, and your profile — all visible, all free.
Beyond the Big Five
Attachment style and emotional intelligence measured alongside your traits — dimensions most personality tests skip entirely.
$19 once, if you want more
The full narrative report plus compatibility reports — one purchase, no subscription.
Yes. The full Plexality assessment is free, and so are your results: complete trait spectrums, your archetype, and your profile — not a teaser with the real scores behind a paywall. The optional $19 report adds a full narrative analysis and compatibility reports, but the test and your scores cost nothing.
Five continuous trait spectrums: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (emotional reactivity) — often remembered by the acronym OCEAN. Unlike type-based tests, you get a position on each spectrum rather than a box, which is how personality actually varies between people.
The Big Five has substantially stronger scientific support. MBTI-style tests sort you into either/or letter types, and independent research finds 39–76% of people receive a different type on retest. The Big Five scores you on continuous spectrums, replicates across cultures and decades of research, and predicts real-life outcomes better than any competing model. Our full Big Five vs. MBTI comparison covers the details.
Research by DeYoung, Quilty and Peterson (2007) showed each of the five traits splits into two distinct aspects — for example, Extraversion divides into Enthusiasm and Assertiveness, and Openness into Intellect and Aesthetics. Two people with identical trait scores can be very different people at the aspect level. Plexality measures at this aspect level, which is where the more precise self-knowledge lives.
Each score places you on a spectrum relative to other people — there are no good or bad positions, only trade-offs. High conscientiousness buys reliability at the cost of flexibility; low agreeableness buys directness at the cost of friction. A good report explains those trade-offs for your specific combination of scores, which is exactly what the Plexality narrative report does.
Traits are stable but not frozen. Longitudinal research shows gradual, meaningful change across life stages — most people become more conscientious and agreeable with age — and deliberate effort can move specific traits. Because the Big Five uses continuous scores, a retest can actually show you the movement instead of just flipping you into a different box.
Free academic tests are genuinely good at producing numbers — we recommend them in our platform comparison. What they don’t do is interpretation: you get 30 scores and a definition of each. Plexality measures the same validated trait family, then maps your combination to one of 33 archetypes, connects it to attachment style and emotional intelligence, and gives you a coach chat that can actually discuss your results.
